i think 3D displays are one of the biggest missed opportunities of the 2010s. we should be living in a world where 3D displays are practically synonymous with computers, where OSes can read images as 3D in file previews and the viewing angle reacts to the mouse position onscreen. monitors should have built-in non-internet-connected cameras and depth sensors to track the user's face and make sure the 3D image is always clear, the same way the New 3DS did all the way back in 2014 and the same way virtual pinball hobbyists have (kind of) been doing for well over a decade. i've been using anaglyph 3D glasses when i can because i cannot for the life of me track down an actual 3D display at a reasonable price, and the coolest thing about it to me is the way it completely bypasses any kind of display tech or potential software-level discrepancies; if an image is red and blue, it becomes 3D through a red and blue filter. if only the work were put in to make it that seamless for hsbs images.
the tech is there. why it didn't see mass adoption is beyond me.
one of my current projects is optimizing this website for viewing on the Nintendo 3DS browser because for some reason that's important to me. to that end, this page contains 3D images, but i've had to compromise and make them anaglyph, so a pair of red and blue glasses is recommended (2D images are also included here for convenience, for now).
